THE VALUE OF THE HANDS BEHIND THE BOTTLE

The standards of Doctorado extend beyond what goes into the bottle.

Doctorado was created around a simple belief: if we expect exceptional work, we must place exceptional value on the people who perform it.

That principle follows our spirit from the agricultural and production relationships we maintain in Mexico to the work performed under the Doctorado name in the United States. We believe craftsmanship deserves more than recognition after the bottle is finished. It deserves respect while the work is being done.

For that reason, no person employed by Doctorado is paid less than twice the applicable minimum wage. Positions carrying greater responsibility, specialized knowledge, technical skill, or a more critical role in maintaining the standards of Doctorado are compensated accordingly. We do not view the legal minimum as the measure of what someone's contribution is worth. It is simply the minimum the law permits.

Our philosophy asks a different question: What does it take to create an environment in which talented people want to do exceptional work?

Compensation is part of that answer, but it is not the entirety of it. People should be treated with dignity, provided a professional and respectful working environment, and given the opportunity to take pride in what they help create. Whether the work takes place in the United States or through the relationships we maintain in Mexico, we want the people associated with Doctorado to understand that their contribution matters.

OUR PARTNERS IN MEXICO

Doctorado's relationship with Mexico carries particular significance. The agave, agricultural knowledge, production traditions, and generations of experience behind this category of spirits cannot be separated from the people and communities from which they come.

We approach our relationships in Mexico with respect for both the product and the people behind it. As Doctorado develops its agricultural and production partnerships, compensation, working conditions, and the treatment of workers are part of the standards by which those relationships are evaluated.

For partner operations contributing directly to Doctorado, our expectation is clear: the people whose labor contributes to our spirit should be compensated at no less than twice the applicable local minimum wage for that work, with greater compensation where responsibility, experience, specialized knowledge, or technical skill warrants it.

We would rather accept greater production costs than build a premium spirit around labor that we believe has been undervalued.

BEYOND THE MINIMUM

Minimum wage establishes a legal floor. It was never intended to define the highest value an employer can place upon another person's work.

Doctorado begins from a different position.

We believe compensation should reflect contribution. Someone entrusted with greater responsibility, specialized work, production oversight, quality control, or decisions that can materially affect what ultimately reaches the bottle should see that responsibility reflected in his or her compensation.

This philosophy is not limited to wages. A meaningful working environment also requires respect, reasonable expectations, safe and appropriate conditions, and the understanding that every person has a life beyond the work performed for Doctorado.

A company cannot speak convincingly about craftsmanship while treating the craftsman as interchangeable.

We have no interest in doing so.

QUALITY HAS A HUMAN ELEMENT

Technology can improve consistency. Equipment can improve efficiency. Systems can help us measure, document, and repeat a process. We value those advantages where they improve what we do.

But Doctorado has never been conceived as a product in which human judgment becomes unnecessary.

There are points throughout the process where experience matters. There are differences that instruments can measure and others that an experienced person can recognize. Doctorado is handled, evaluated, and fine-tuned by people because we believe the final standard of a premium spirit should never be surrendered entirely to automation.

That makes the people behind Doctorado particularly important.

When human judgment is part of what creates the value of the finished bottle, the people exercising that judgment should themselves be valued.

GROWTH WITHOUT COMPROMISE

Doctorado was never designed around producing the greatest possible number of bottles at the lowest possible cost.

Our production can grow. Our relationships can expand. Additional qualified sources may eventually become part of Doctorado, and more people may become responsible for carrying the spirit from its origins to the person who ultimately opens the bottle.

What should not change is the philosophy governing that growth.

We will not pursue a lower labor cost simply because it improves a spreadsheet. We will not ask a partner to meet demanding production standards while ignoring the conditions under which those standards are achieved. And we will not regard the people behind Doctorado merely as another production expense to be reduced whenever possible.

Growth should create opportunity without diminishing standards.

That applies to what is inside the bottle and to the people responsible for putting it there.

LUXURY SHOULD HAVE INTEGRITY

A premium bottle should represent more than expensive glass, careful presentation, and a distinguished name.

Its value should reach backward through the process.

It should be reflected in the quality of the ingredients selected, the patience allowed during production, the standards applied to blending and finishing, and the way the people responsible for that work are treated.

Doctorado will never suggest that compensation alone creates a perfect workplace. It does not. But we believe fair and meaningful compensation is one of the clearest ways an organization demonstrates what it values.

When someone holds a bottle of Doctorado, we want there to be something substantial behind its price. Not merely scarcity, presentation, or a carefully written story, but decisions made throughout the process that reflect the standards represented by the name on the bottle.

The same philosophy that refuses to make Doctorado easier to produce simply to make it easier to obtain also guides how we think about the people behind it.

We believe the people who help create something exceptional should participate meaningfully in the value they help create.

It is part of what Doctorado is.
